The German theologian Wolfhart Pannenburg has just died. For the past forty years he has been one of the most constructive theologians.
Mea Culpa. This was not from a book but an interview with an American Theologian Thomas Oard entitled Confessions of a Trinitarian Evolutionist. http://www.metanexus.net/essay/confessions-trinitarian-evolutionist (Thanks to Glenn Branch of NCSE for correstion!!)
Here he exhibits both a right understanding of Genesis on creation and an excellent feel for evolutionary science.
I love the thought of Darwin not thinking that animals sprang form the earth, which is what John Milton said in Paradise Lost;
The tawny lion,pawing to get free His hinder parts, then springs as broke from bonds
However this crude picture is how many have envisaged the creation of animals and in 1861 John Colenso said we are groaning under the burden of Milton’s mythology. Sadly Creationists still are as they put forward their absurd ideas and call them Christian.
Far better is to read this quote from Pannenburg and take it to heart
