    In the UK, there are clear historical links between social reform, criticism of the establishment (including the established churches in England and at that time Scotland) and what is sometimes called the “non-conformist conscience”. Quakers and Unitarians were prominent; I don’t know how far this is true of groups more similar to what we would now call evangelical.

      In the long 19th century many evangelicals in all churches including CofE were heavily involved in philanthropy and social concern . List is very long but included Wilberforce et al on slavery Barnado, Shaftesbury , medical missionaries and even the RSPCA, also schools etc which is why we still have many church schools. In USA paradox was that northern evangelicals eg Finney were opposed to slavery but the opposite in southern states. The picture is very varied
